How to hide files and folders in Windows XP – The easy way

Ok, so here’s a quick little tip for those people who want to hide a particular file or folder on their computers, but don’t feel like spending $40 on a piece of software for that one single purpose! This method of hiding files and folders in Windows XP is quite rudimentary, which means that if someone knows what they are doing with computers, it could be found pretty easily. However, it’s a great way to hide folders from people like your parents or people who only know how to check their email and that’s it!

First of all, if you have a folder you want to hide, don’t create the folder in some obvious place such as My Documents, instead put it in a location that someone would typically not look into. For example, create a new folder under C:\Program Files. Creating a folder there doesn’t hurt anything at all and not many people go browsing through their anyway since it’s mostly just system installation files.

Now that you have your folder created in a strange location and your files stored in that folder, we can make it hidden. Setting a folder to Hidden in Windows XP is simply changing one of the properties of the folder, i.e. 0 means not hidden and 1 means hidden. Windows Explorer reads this property and appropriately shows or hides the folder. However, there is an option in Windows Explorer called “Show hidden files and folders” that will display all folders no matter what the hidden property value is set to.

We need to change that setting so that hidden files and folders are not to be shown. In order to do this, click on My Computer from your desktop and from the menu click on Tools and then Folder Options.

Click on the View tab and under the Hidden Files and Folders section, choose the radio button that says “Do not show hidden files and folders”.

Click OK to save the changes. Usually this option is already set by default to hide files and folders, but it’s good to check anyway just to make sure. Ok, now to hide the folder itself, go into the folder that has the folder you want to hide, right-click on it and choose Properties.

Click OK and your folder should no longer be visible in the current window you have open. It’s hidden and you won’t be able to see it unless you do the same procedure as mentioned above and change the option back to Show Hidden Files and Folders. Now if you want to save anything into the hidden folder, you could un-hide it and then save the file and then re-hide it, but that’s really not necessary.

In order to save a file to a hidden folder, all you need to do is specify the entire path in the File Name box. Fox example, if you’re saving a Word document, you could save the files to the hidden folder by typing in C:\Program Files\Secret\filename.doc and click Save.

And that’s it! A very simple and easy way to hide a folder that will probably work on most people unless they are computer geeks!! Any more suggestions, leave a comment!

The Way by hide and unhide Photo, Music, Video, Iso, Game with Code Button

=============
== 1. Installation ==
=============

1. Open .RAR.
2. Copy folder "hidefile" to ms0:/seplugins/.
3. Create blank .txt file and call it vsh.txt and put this line into the file:

ms0:/seplugins/hidefile/hidefile.prx

4. Start your PSP and boot to Recovery Menu.
5. Choose option "Plugins" and enable "hidefile.prx" plugin.
6. Exit recovery. Plugin has been installed for use in XMB.

========
= 2. Usage =
========

Toggle HideFile - RTRIGGER (set by default)
Accept code - LTRIGGER (set by default)e
Stop HideFile - START (this partially solves the problem with browser,
toggle HideFile and press START before you click
on Internet Browser icon.)

==========
= 3. Settings =
==========

You can change:

- Toggle button
- Accept code button
- Folders to hide

After you install HideFile, enable USB and go to "ms0:/seplugins/hidefile/".
There will be new file called "hidefile.ini":

ToggleButton - you can choose your own button, read below how to setup custom buttons
AcceptCodeButton - you can choose your own button, read below how to setup custom buttons
Code - code which you can change
HidePhoto - set to 1 if you want to hide Photo folders, else set to 0
HideMusic - set to 1 if you want to hide Music folders, else set to 0
HideVideo - set to 1 if you want to hide Video folders, else set to 0
HideISO - set to 1 if you want to hide ISO folder, else set to 0
HideGAME - set to 1 if you want to hide GAME folders, else set to 0
StatusLine - this line holds status, if folders were hidden. I don't
advise you to change this line

I had to change custom button code, because it didn't work properly. Now, every button has
its own number code. So instead of button name, you write there button code.

List of button codes:

button code = 9 key = RTRIGGER
button code = 10 key = LTRIGGER
button code = 11 key = CIRCLE
button code = 12 key = SQUARE
button code = 13 key = CROSS
button code = 14 key = TRIANGLE
button code = 15 key = SELECT
button code = 16 key = START
button code = 17 key = UP
button code = 18 key = DOWN
button code = 19 key = LEFT
button code = 20 key = RIGHT

Example of default settings:

9 <-- means RTRIGGER
10 <-- means LTRIGGER
1234 <-- default access code
1 <-- PHOTO folders will be hidden
1 <-- MUSIC folders will be hidden
1 <-- VIDEO folders will be hidden
1 <-- ISO folder will be hidden
1 <-- GAME folders will be hidden
StatusLine

If you make mistake or you delete the file, then simply (delete damaged file and) reboot your PSP.
New file will be created and saved in "ms0:/seplugins/hidefile/" folder.

NOTE: Every time you change hidefile.ini, you must reboot PSP so plugin will read new settings.
NOTE2: If you open hidefile.ini in NotePad, you will see new line characters (small rectangles).
Do not delete new line characters.
